How To Stay Safe with Narcan
What is a Narcan?
Narcan, also known by its generic name naloxone, is a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose—including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications—when given promptly.
How Does It Work?
It works by attaching to opioid receptors in the body and reversing their effects. If someone’s breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose, naloxone can quickly help them start breathing normally again. But, it doesn’t do anything if a person doesn’t have opioids in their body, and it doesn’t treat opioid addiction.
Remember, never use drugs alone—always tell a friend if you’re taking something. And make sure that friend knows where to find naloxone (Narcan), a medication that can save lives.
